Kenya offers a profound opportunity. While the architecture of a child’s future is built long before they ever see a chalkboard, many families in rural regions like Kitui County face a silent struggle. Subsistence farming — the primary source of income in the area — demands long hours, and the availability for early childhood caregiving is often a challenge. This leaves children at risk of not reaching their full developmental potential.
The GIFT CONNECT Kenya program, implemented by our Global Ambassador, Stellar Mengele and her foundation (SMF), is proving that we don’t have to wait for children to fall behind before we intervene. From 2023 to 2025, this program has embarked on a journey that didn’t just teach childcare—it transformed the very fabric of thirteen communities in Kitui.
Transformational Results
The GIFT CONNECT Kenya program revealed a dramatic shift in how families engage with their youngest members. Responses from over 350 caregivers show a total revolution in parenting practices and knowledge:
- Before the program, 78% of caregivers reported having little to no knowledge of caregiving practices. After participation, 100% of participants reported being “very knowledgeable.”
- Initially, 58% described their caregiving as “not very loving” or “not caring at all”. By the end of the program, 99% rated their caregiving as “very loving and caring.”
- Positive practices like the Six Loving Habits were almost entirely absent at the start. Following the training, 99% of parents and caregivers now sing songs to their children daily.
- 100% of participants highly approve of the program’s continuation and would recommend it to others.
“Now I sing and talk to my baby every day — I can see she is more active.”
— Caregiver, Kyondoni
Beyond these headlines, the program led to a significant increase in community connection. While many caregivers entered the program feeling isolated or frustrated by behavioral challenges, 99% now feel better equipped to handle household stress and conflict in a child-protective way because of their community support.

Backed By the Six Loving Habits
The program’s success is anchored in an evidence-based approach that resonates with the local people and culture — Speak, Sing, Read, Play, Count, and Serve & Return.
- Culturally Grounded Tools: Using music, lullaby creation, and storytelling, the program meets caregivers where they are, using the power of local culture to build neural connections.
- Holistic Support: By integrating with local health officials and community leaders, the program ensures families receive holistic support, bridging the gap between national policy and lived reality.
“The health worker repeats the same lessons we get from the program, so we know it is important.“
— Caregiver, Kwa Ndondo
- Economic Empowerment: Through a unique Table Banking model, 100% of participants joined financial support groups. 47% used these loans to start small businesses, thereby reducing the financial stress that often hinders nurturing care.

A Change in Behavior
One of the most striking findings was the shift in child development. Before the program, over 53% of children were described as physically aggressive. Caregivers often viewed their children through a lens of frustration.
By the end of the program, 88% of children were reported to have made significant progress in literacy and numeracy. The negative behaviors—aggression, non-compliance, and withdrawal—virtually disappeared from reporting, replaced by a focus on developmental milestones.
“Before, my child would cry a lot, but since I learned to play and respond, he is calmer.“
— Caregiver, Katutu
It Takes a Village
The impact of this work extends beyond mothers. While 91% of our participants are mothers, the effects have reached the entire family.
- In our non-brand ambassador cohorts, 21% are fathers and 16% are grandmothers, ensuring the Six Loving Habits are reinforced across generations.
- 89% of community leaders reported a very positive impact from the program, noting improved social trust and collaboration.

A Vision for Kenya’s Future
Research indicates that high-quality early childhood programs deliver a 7% to 13.7% return on investment by improving adult health, earnings, and national productivity.
We believe Kitui County is just the beginning. By focusing on the window from birth to age three, we are not just putting a bandage on the problem — we are building the foundation for a lifetime of success.
GIFT CONNECT Kenya is planning to expand its reach not just by increasing programming in Kitui County, but also by working to embed these practices into routine county health and social service structures and by replicating this successful model in other counties across Kenya.
The time is now. Waiting until school starts to address development is looking too late. By planting seeds of language, connection, and love in the first three years, we ensure that the next generation of Kenyans will flourish.
